Common Questions About Interior Painting

How often should I paint my interior walls?

We recommend 5-7 years, although this does depend on quite a few factors. When you see your walls show noticeable discoloration, and a chalky look, that’s a sign that it is time for a repaint. Factors such as foot traffic, and high activity might change this recommended timeline as well.

A guest bedroom most likely can be extended out a couple of years, whereas entry ways, hallways and kitchens will likely fall within this timeline. The quality and the way the paint was applied also matters.

For example, many new construction homes use lower quality paints because they are typically just trying to get the job done quickly with the expectation the homeowner will soon change the color.

If you a builder or other painter leaves a can that says ‘Promar 200’ which is a Sherwin-Williams product, that is on the lower end of quality meaning your home will need an interior paint job sooner rather than later. I always use the best paint in the industry because I believe in your home looking stunning for as long as possible. Find out more about my favorite interior wall paint.

How many coats of paint will you apply?

At least two. We want to ensure the best results which is why we go with a primer and a base coat before finishing with a top coat. Depending on if we are going from noticeably darker to lighter there may be additional coats required. Whatever is needed to get the job done, my team and I are work diligently to make sure you love your space!

How do I pick the right paint sheen?

Let’s make this easy, sheen is essentially “how shiny” would you like the paint to look? In my 9 + years of experience, most of my clients follow this formula for choosing the right paint sheen: Walls = Satin or Matte, Satin is going to have a little more shine than matte and be more washable and durable.Good for high traffic areas and high moisture areas.

Ceiling = Flat, that’s the least shiny that way you don’t bring shine to your ceiling, However, you might consider doing Matte if you have bathroom ceiling that is just drywalled and not tiled.

Cabinets, trim and doors: Typically semi-gloss (most shine out of all of these) or satin. That way you have plenty of durability and washability. Think grabbing (cabinets and doors) or cleaning (running a mop against baseboards).

How many paint samples can we get?

Short answer, as many as it takes. Real paint is always going to be more beneficial than simply holding up color cards or a fandeck. I’ve built awesome relationships with Steamboat’s paint suppliers which streamlines paint matches for my customers.
