Exterior Painting Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I paint the exterior of my home?

Repainting your exterior depends on the different areas, surface material, sunlight/UV exposure, snow/ice build up and moisture. For your home’s main body we recommend between 5 to 10 years. For your deck, we recommend staining every 2 to 4 years. This is because of the intense UV exposure during the summer and snow/ice build up during the winter. Steamboat is more unforgiving on homes which means that painting and staining your exterior needs to be more frequent.

Materials like concrete, masonry and stucco typically fair better than wood and composite siding and can extend your recommended repaint timeline.

When is the best time to paint the exterior of my home?

The best exterior painting times are middle to late summer season. Mid-June to late August. When painting, the surface temperature needs to be above 35 degrees for the paint to properly adhere and cure. When the temperature is too low, which occurs at night in late spring and autumn, paint has a strong likelihood failure and bubbling. Just because a paint is dry on the surfuce, it still needs to cure or form it’s bond and achieve its maximum hardness and durability. This usually takes a week for most exterior paints but can sometimes be longer with speciality paints that are used for exterior doors and trim.

Can you paint my metal roof?

Yes, we have the equipment, crew and expertise to paint all areas and surfaces of your home. Over my professional painting career I have built great relationships with my vendors and rep at Sherwin Williams in Steamboat to ensure I always have access to the best paint products for your home.

We can paint and stain all surfaces: Brick, stucco, concrete/ masonry, aluminum and galvenized metal, cedar siding, Hardie Board siding, long homes, and concrete walkways and driveways.

How long should it take to paint my house?

I strive for 3 to 5 days. Weather and change orders will delay this process. Other ways to expedite your exterior repaint is to have a color scheme in mind so we spend less time sampling and color selecting. Stain matching also takes time and can add to the time frame as well.
